Humanitarian Commitment
Dr. Sofeene Chan is passionate about dentistry and traveling. She has found a meaningful way to merge the two and give back to wonderful communities where dentistry may not be readily accessible. Since 2001, she has been volunteering her time and dentistry skills to serve various communities in different parts of the world. She hopes to reach more places and continue the experience in the near future.
Cleveland, Ohio As a training doctor in dental school, she has volunteered regularly at the Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland to provide dental extractions for patients without access to private dental care. The clinic is one of the oldest non-profit clinics in the United States and the largest in Ohio. Guaricano, Dominican Republic Dr. Chan has joined her fellow colleagues at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine to volunteer in a community dental clinic in Guaricano, Dominican Republic. Local residents lined up before dawn each day, hoping to receive much needed dental care in their underserved community. Armed with limited supplies and equipments, the team was able to provide services from cleanings and dental sealants to extractions and fillings. The experience was very rewarding and everyone enjoyed communicating with the locals in broken “Spanglish”. Sacred Valley, Peru The most recent volunteer experience was in Sacred Valley of Peru, with the group Kindness In Action to provide dental care for the rural community. The team worked relentlessly to treat as many patients as possible with limited resources. This was one of the most memorable experiences, a lot of children came alone to seek dental treatments and their courage and independence was admirable. Dr. Chan felt very fortunate to have helped the community while enjoying the majestic mountain views of this beautiful country. Helping others is a privilege and we strongly believe in Giving Forward the rewards that our profession has granted us. |
